Rounding up or down decimals, tenth or hunderdth

    How to Round Numbers

Rounding helps make numbers easier to read and work with, while keeping them close to their original value.

    Rounding to decimal places

    1. Decide how many decimal places you want to keep.
    2. Look at the digit immediately to the right of the last decimal place you are keeping.
    3. If that digit is 5 or greater, round up.
    4. If that digit is 0–4, keep the number the same.

Examples (round to 1 decimal place)

    • 12.444449 → 12.4
The next digit is 4, so the number stays the same.
    • 75.95 → 76.0
The next digit is 5, so the number rounds up.
    • 12345.9984 → 12346.0
Rounding causes the number to increase to the next whole number.

Remember: Rounding to decimal places is different from rounding to significant digits. Always follow the decimal-place rule when a specific number of decimals is requested.
